Traveling with kids means constantly calculating whether a place is going to work or turn into a stress test. St. Albans works. The downtown is walkable without being so big that little legs give out. There's a park right in the middle of everything with open space where kids can run. The library has programs that don't require advance registration and complex planning. And there are enough family-friendly activities within ten minutes that you can pivot when weather or moods change without throwing the whole day off.
The other thing that makes it work is that the places here expect families. Restaurants are ready with high chairs, and the museum has exhibits kids can interact with. The rail trail is flat enough for training wheels and strollers. Families are part of regular life here, so the infrastructure accommodates them.
If you're planning a day trip or looking for a base to explore northern Vermont with kids in tow, St. Albans gives you options that don't require too many logistics.
Taylor Park
Taylor Park is a great starting point. There's open lawn space where kids can run and walking paths with surrounding gardens. In summer, the Wednesday evening concerts are perfect for families because kids can play and dance while parents listen to music.
Houghton Park
Houghton Park is another great option for getting the zoomies out! Walkable from Downtown, park has great walking trails, picnic areas, courts (basketball and pickleball), and exactly the playground you've been looking for.
Saint Albans Free Library
The Saint Albans Free Library has a good children's section and runs regular story times and programs. The summer reading program is great, often offering rewards and activities for kids reaching their reading goals. They also have teen activities and study spaces for older kids. It's a comfortable place to hang out, and the staff is helpful.
Saint Albans Historical Museum
The Saint Albans Historical Museum is a wonderful spot for kids, especially if they're into trains. The railroad exhibits are hands-on to keep them engaged, and the Civil War stories are interesting and hold attention.
The museum also has an awesome CREATE Kids' Cover! The Cove is the first exhibit space just for kids, themed around the St. Albans Bay. Children will enjoy the opportunity to learn about ecological conservation, the Bay's native species and the impact the Bay has had on the history of St. Albans, through sensory boards, kinetic sand, a large Budda Board, and more in the STEAM center. This is a must do!
Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail
The Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail is stroller-friendly and bike-friendly. The trail is flat and includes paved and packed gravel sections, making it great for all ages and abilities. It's a good way to burn off energy, and you can go as far as you want.
Burton Island
The gem for families is Burton Island, twenty minutes from town. You take a ferry from Kill Kare State Park to get there, and the ferry ride itself makes kids happy. Once you're on the island, there are easy hiking trails, a small beach, and camping.

Hard'ack Recreation Area
Hard'ack Recreation Area has a pool year-round, letting folks of all ages spend time swimming. There's a winter sledding hill when there's snow, and hiking and snowshoeing trails that aren't too challenging for kids. It's the place local families default to because it's close, many activities are free, and it has a wide variety of opportunities.
Lake Champlain
Lake Champlain access is ten minutes away. St. Albans Bay has a small beach area for swimming, and the water is usually calmer than the wider parts of the lake. Kids can dip their toes in the water and play in the sand. Plus, you can grab a creemee at the nearby stand, a lovely summer treat for all.
Family-Friendly Restaurants
For food, Mimmo's Pizzeria is one of the most reliably kid-friendly, offering a kids menu and a friendly environment. Feldman's Bagels works for quick breakfast or lunch, with a wide range of bagel sandwiches to choose from. Tim's Place is classic diner food in a booth, so kids can color while you wait for food.

Family Events Throughout the Year
St. Albans runs family-focused events year-round, from summer concerts and seasonal festivals to holiday celebrations that bring the community together. Rather than list them all here (because schedules change and new events pop up), check our family events calendar to see what's happening when you're visiting. Many events are free, most are designed with kids in mind, and the calendar gets updated regularly.
